2001 xcsp 600 crankcase questions

samedi 5 décembre 2015

Polaris Liberty 600 crank snap ring groove ear broke off when I was installing the crankshaft today. I was not being very careful so it was my fault. The top case half still has a full groove and the bottom as you can see in the picture has over half a groove yet. What's the purpose of this one snap ring groove? Just alignment purposes during assembly before the case halves are tightened? Or does it serve as a mechanical/load bearing surface while in operation? Once the case halves are tightened the crank shouldn't go anywhere anyways in my opinion, but I'm not sure. Any professional input would be greatly appreciated!! Can I still use this case? Also it looks like an oil gallery where the piece broke off that somehow lubricates the water pump/oil pump driveshaft gear. How does this shaft receive lubrication in detail. Does oil get fed from the oil pump itself and it drains out this slot into the case or does the oil come in from the case? And if the snap ring is in this groove doesn't it block oil from traveling all together?
