Hello everyone, my name is Andrew and I've come here numerous times as a guest to troubleshoot some problems, but I've got one that I just can't seem to figure out.
I've lived my whole life in Northern Michigan but have only been riding for about a year.
Now I'm mechanically inclined, and have pretty much done all the work myself over 6 different sleds, Polaris, Arctic Cat, and Yamaha. I personally own a 99 Yamaha 700, but I've been trying to figure out a problem.
So regarding the Puma, it's a 96, 340 single carb.
The problem I am experiencing is idle. I cannot get it to idle. I once was able to when it was warmer ( about a month ago ), but since firing her up today, it just won't.
So, if I start her up, and tickle the throttle, it will stay running. If I hammer it down, it revs up just fine. Leave her alone, and it stalls out within 5-10 seconds.
I just got in from my 1st attempt today to fix her. This is what I did,
Drained old gas, took off carb. Replaced with fresh gas.
THOUROUGHLY cleaned carb, cleaned out fuel lines, put back together. Retrieved the gas pickup tub using a coat hanger, made sure the filter was not clogged, and it was not.
Inspected choke cable, it is a little beat up but appears to be functioning as it should.
Throttle cable also looks good, not beat up.
Intake boot is in good condition,
Spark plugs are new.
Compression is good.
I read somewhere to start the air and fuel screws around 1 turn out and adjust the air out up to 2 1/2.
I tried all different adjustments but she always stalled out.
Throttle position cable was messed with and didn't appear to make a difference.
This is probably the 10-12th carb that I've gone through and never had a problem with my reassembly. The only thing that I noticed is the needle valve (the piece that pushes down on the floats, shaped like a pyramid ) did not have a metal clip that held onto the bracket. Sorry for my terminology in advance.
Other than that, I don't really know how to adjust floats or what to look for there.
So I am guessing it is one of these things.
Anyone have any ideas? This sled is sort of a family relic and means a lot to the in-laws. It would be great if I could get her running right for them.
Thanks!
