97 Skandic - What to expect for mileage

dimanche 31 janvier 2016

I bought a 97 Skandic 500 fan, WT, one carb, with 2-up late last year, took it for only a couple rides last year, so I don't really know how things were going last year.

This year, I started taking it on my short trapline a bit and I ran out of fuel twice. Both times, I had checked fuel prior to leaving and thought I would have lots, so was shocked to have run out of fuel.

After that, I filled the tank full, and used it for 2 days, which would amount to about 14-16 miles or so (forgot to reset the odometer). I don't know how accurate the fuel gauge is, but after this it was just under a quarter tank. By my estimation compared to how much fuel I added to fill it right up, this would be about 8 gallons of fuel (imp. gallon) so, like 2 mpg, or worse.

The sled was carrying 2 people (310 lbs combined) and pulling a sleigh that was maybe carrying 15 lbs worth of cargo. Most of these days were spent on a trail that had been blazed by another sled, so a packed trail, but about 1-1.5 miles of it was busting through deep soft snow (1-1.5 feet deep)

I understand these Skandics don't get the greatest mileage, but is it really supposed to be this bad, considering the conditions?

At the end of the first day, the sled bogged down bad on a packed hard trail, had no power and I limped home part way till I gave up and walked home. When I went out to tow it home, I started it and it ran well so I drove it home, but was starting to act up again within a quarter mile. At home, I found one plug nice and brown (normal) and the other black and all gunked up. I changed the plugs and didn't have this problem on the second day.

Also, I noticed that the rubber hose connected to the air intake on the carb had a 2 inch long crack in the rubber, allowing it to suck air.

I am wondering if any of you guys can give me some direction as to what might be the problem here? Would the cracked air hose kill the mileage like that?

With that kind of mileage, it sures kills my profit on the trapline
