Greetings ! I am new to this forum, and basically new to snowmobiles. I bought a '92 Polaris Indy 500 Classic a few weeks ago, only 2100 miles on the speedo but it doesn't seem to be working, so no idea what it really has. Seems to be in very good shape overall, engine starts and runs excellent. I also bought the Clymer Shop Manual.
It hasn't been run much in 4 years and there was a fair amount of old grease and gunk in and around the primary clutch so I took the outer half off and cleaned it with brake cleaner and re-assembled. The belt looks good and seems to measure correctly.
Here's the problem.
(and keep in mind that is no snow here so riding it for a test run is pretty much out of the question at my house)
With the track up off the ground and the sled supported everything seems to work fine. The drive clutch engages the belt and the track runs smoothly both in forward and reverse.
With the sled on the ground (with or without me on it) the clutch does not move very far when rev'd up and the track does not move, and I can smell the belt heating up. Basically when it's on the ground it is not moving at all. When it's up and supported everything is great.
Is there something relatively simple that I have overlooked in my test ?
I appreciate any and all advice that you may have !
