Seized up motor on a 800?

Ok,
Now that my buddy's sled is in my driveway, I guess I should do something with it.
Yesterday, we were about 20 miles into a ride, first part was in narrow path with powder for about 8 miles, then into a groomed road where we were moving pretty good. I was in front, so I didn't see what happen, with my buddy on his 2001 800RMK, and few other riders behind.
The report I got was that white smoke came out twice as he was cruising right along, then he lost power and it stopped. He said it did not go into limp mode and no over temp light.
I turned around and went back, and when I got there, we lift the hood and I saw that the oil line behind the clutch was melted off, the clamp still on the fitting. I also noticed the coolant bottle was empty.

After check it out, I realized that the clutch would not turn nor the pull rope. We took off the drive belt and towed back.

What I did today was pull the plugs and the plug from the cylinder closest to the clutch looked white, with no oil residue and the other looked the normal blackish.....

Trying to help him decide what to do next. I am wondering if the oil line went, then it seized, or if it got hot, and the oil line melted?
Could it blow a head gasket and all the coolant went out the motor? Lost the water pump belt?
Or is the famous 800 failure that I have heard about. Sled has 4500 miles on it. I would of thought it would of gone into limp mode or over heat light would come on if it was about to go.

Any thoughts on what he should do? Rebuild it or sell it for parts. The sled is generally very clean and was running great. He has had it for about five years.

Not sure if I should start to tear it down or just leave it...... Don't really need another project, rather ride than wrench ;-)
