Homemade solvent?

I'm rebuilding the engine in my sled this summer. I have it all disassembled and am to the point of cleaning everything. The problem I have is I don't have access to any kind of solvent tank or parts washer. I was wondering what everybody else used to clean stuff up. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to get what the parts stores have. I've heard and read that some guys have homemade concoctions that they use but some of them sound somewhat dangerous with what they're mixing. If someone has a good recipe for a solvent or some kind of cleaner that would work please let me know.
