Common parts...

I just wanted to say that most manufacturers don't specify "we need the bearing to be XX size" and design the bearing around the purpose.

It is the other way around. They purchase common bearings and design the purpose around the bearing.

I use bearing as the example, but this goes for a lot of different parts. Older sleds mostly used Mikuni Carbs for example. There is no magic dust that Arctic Cat, Polaris or Skidoo adds to the carbs. VM34 is a VM34. The only difference there might be is where things attach. Often this is just a matter of a plug covering the hole on one side while a fitting is on the other. They can actually be swapped, although finding plugs might be difficult.

Hyfax is another one that comes to mind. You know what the difference between hyfax for a 96' Skidoo Touring E 136" and an 2007 Arctic Cat 153" is? Length and color. I cut down a set of green ones and put on my Touring. I'm told that some hyfax's have a different hole for the bolt, but between 2 Polaris's 4 Arctic Cats, and 5 Skidoos, the only one that was different was the 85 Tundra, which was much thinner.

The point is, that if the part is used on other things, chances are they just bought a bulk common part and fit the rest of the purpose around it.
