Help xlt slp heads question??!!

So I tore my motor down (95 xlt 600) and it has slp heads on it which is cool but there's a metal plate under the heads that I don't understand why it's there looks like it judy blocks most of the cooling passages to the heads off. I'll take pictures and post them. I don't want my motor melting down cuz it can't cool because something isn't right
